BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - A bomb squad from Malmstrom Air Force Base has disposed of a 12-pound cannonball found in the Gallatin History Museum in Bozeman.

Museum executive director Bill Jones found the fused cannonball packed in cotton inside a wooden box stored in the museum’s vault. A note inside said it was found by a rancher in 1923 but first fired by Fort Ellis soldiers during an 1898 skirmish.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1NOhfjz ) that X-rays clearly showed an explosive core but analysis was inconclusive as to the stability of the cannonball.

Staff Sgt. Michael Muck decided to destroy it with a controlled blast, which was done on Friday.
