ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - Roswell police say an off-duty officer has been arrested and hospitalized after showing signs of suicidal behavior.

Police say Chavez County sheriff’s deputies were called Saturday around 1:30 a.m. to the home of 24-year-old Valerie Palombi.

Deputies say Palombi was on the front porch but went inside, where several gunshots were heard.

Palombi came out an hour later but refused commands to drop her handgun and approached deputies and police officers.

An officer fired beanbag rounds at Palombi, causing her to fall.

She was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition. She faces one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

She has been with the department since January 2014.

Investigators say they are treating the incident as an attempted suicide.
