GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say one person was killed and another was critically injured after a police chase in Orange County ended when a driver crashed into a pole.

The California Highway Patrol says the pursuit began early Sunday when officers tried to stop a speeding Honda Accord on Interstate 5 in Orange.

Officer Tino Olivera said the car’s driver did not stop and led officers on a high-speed chase, during which he struck another vehicle near a freeway off-ramp.

Olivera said the driver lost control of the car in Garden Grove and struck a pole. The car caught fire. The driver and two passengers escaped the car before it became engulfed in flames, but one man who remained in the car died at the scene.

The driver was arrested.
