SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A 21-year-old central New York man has died from injuries suffered in a crash over the weekend.

State police say John Whalen of Central Square was on State Route 45 in Palermo around 6:20 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle veered off the road’s shoulder and struck a pole. Troopers say the 2002 GMC rolled over and Whalen was ejected and thrown 60 feet from the vehicle.

He was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he later died.

State police say it’s unclear what caused Whalen to drive off the highway.

The investigation into the fatal crash remains open.
