AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - An ex-commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has joined the new medical school at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Mark McClellan was named Monday to the faculty of Dell Medical School, which will enroll its first class next summer.

A UT statement says McClellan will help advance the school’s mission of providing better health care at a lower cost. The internal medicine physician is also a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

McClellan, who grew up in Austin, directs the Robert J. Margolis Center for Health Policy at Duke University. He’s expected to lead a collaboration between the two schools, splitting his time between the universities.

McClellan’s mother is ex-Austin Mayor Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who’s also a former Texas comptroller.
