EMPORIA, Va. (AP) - An Emporia police officer is recovering after being shot near a nightclub.

Multiple news outlets report officer William King of the Emporia Police Department was shot after responding to another shooting at the nightclub Sunday morning.

Officials say King was arresting 26-year-old Christopher R. Powell, the suspect of the first shooting, when another suspect shot and struck King. King was transported to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

A state trooper has been credited with saving King’s life by applying a tourniquet. Police are looking for the person who shot King.

Emporia police are asking anyone with information to call the city’s crime line.
