SIDNEY, Maine (AP) - Police say a 53-year-old woman has died and three others were injured in a fiery crash over the weekend on Route 27 in Sidney.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when Sherry Turner’s vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another motorist.

The Portland Press Herald reports bystanders pulled an 8-year-old boy from Turner’s car just moments before it exploded with her still inside. Turner was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland says the boy was airlifted to Maine Medical Center for unknown head injuries. He was conscious and alert at the hospital.

The driver who collided with Turner and his passenger were both transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
