SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is warning Northern and Central California beach-goers to watch out for strong swells through Tuesday morning.

KPIX reports Monday (https://cbsloc.al/1QaCr3j ) that the forecast calls for large breaking waves and strong rip currents along the coast from Sonoma to Monterey counties.

Boaters and beach-goers should take particular care near jetties, inlets and piers where rip currents are stronger and more frequent.

Swimmers should stick close to lifeguard stations and use the buddy system when wading out into the water.

The news station also reports that in Southern California, lifeguards were flooded with calls to rescue distressed surfers and swimmers over the weekend.

Officials closed jetties along San Diego due to high winds and surf.
