An Indiana high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave after students posted “Whites Only” and “Blacks Only” signs near school bathrooms and drinking fountains as part of a social studies assignment on segregation.

Concord Community Schools Superintendent John Trout said the assignment given to students Friday by a teacher at Concord High School was not previously approved by the school or school district, EAG News reported.

School officials removed the signs shortly after they were posted and talked to students about the incident afterwards, Mr. Trout said in a statement.

“Concord Community Schools appreciates its educators attempting to be innovative in their teaching approach,” the statement said, The Elkhart Truth reported. “However, methods and tactics that can be viewed as harassing or discriminatory to students and teachers are not appropriate and are prohibited in our schools.”

The teacher remains on administrative leave pending further investigation of the matter, the statement said.

The teacher has not been identified.
