SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says three people died when a car crashed into two trees near a San Jose freeway interchange before catching fire.

CHP officers arrived at the scene on Highway 101 just south of Interstate 680 around 2 a.m. Sunday. Officer Daniel Hill tells the San Jose Mercury News (https://bayareane.ws/16gFIdu) the Infiniti was heading south on Highway 101 when it went off the road, hit one tree and then another before coming to rest on an embankment near I-680 and catching fire.

Two men and a woman inside the Infiniti died. They have not been identified pending notification of family.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
