COVINA, Calif. (AP) - A Latino man has been arrested, and is facing hate crime allegations, on suspicion of stabbing of two black men in the parking lot of a Southern California shopping center.

Covina police said Saturday evening’s attacks were apparently unprovoked.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1z48Ij4 ) 19-year-old Louis Vasquez stabbed an 18-year-old Smart & Final store employee who was collecting shopping carts. The attack came hours after Vasquez had been released from jail after serving time for auto theft.

Sgt. Gregg Peterson said when the teen ran away Vasquez shouted insults and racial slurs.

Peterson said Vasquez then headed to a neighboring CVS Pharmacy and attacked a 27-year-old man who was approaching the entrance. The victim was able to disarm Vasquez, who fled and was found hiding in a yard.
