OAK HILL, W.Va. (AP) - Fayette County’s sheriff says a teenage girl is dead after the car she was riding in wrecked while fleeing from police.

Sheriff Steve Kessler tells media outlets that the wreck occurred around 4 a.m. Saturday in Oak Hill.

Kessler says a car driven by a 17-year-old male sped away after a sheriff’s deputy tried to pull it over for a minor traffic violation. The deputy didn’t pursue the car because of icy conditions. The car disappeared from the deputy’s sight and wrecked minutes later.

The sheriff says the 15-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at Plateau Medical Center. The driver is in stable condition at the hospital.

The sheriff’s department is working with the Fayette County prosecutor’s office to determine whether any charges will be filed.
