FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - Police in metro Birmingham are investigating after a man was found shot to death on a street in Fairfield.

Fairfield Police Chief Leon Davis says 34-year-old Laterio Devon Johnson was pronounced dead at the spot where officers found him with a gunshot wound to the head on Saturday afternoon.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1DlnAcd) that witnesses told officers that a possible suspect fled the scene in a white vehicle.

Davis said that suspect later called police and surrendered to Birmingham officers. Police have not released the suspect’s name. Authorities say he was being held as prosecutors reviewed the circumstances to determine whether charges will be filed.

Davis said police are still investigating what led to the shooting.

The shooting is Fairfield’s first homicide of 2015.
