CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - A stretch of Interstate 57 in central Illinois near Champaign is closed after a tanker truck carrying a chemical used in making shampoo overturned.

Illinois State Police say the accident happened about 7 a.m. on Sunday just west of Champaign.

Lt. Steve Hopkins with the Champaign Fire Department says about 70 homes in two nearby neighborhoods were evacuated after the spill. He says the Red Cross and a local church helped house the displaced families. No injuries were reported.

Police say the truck was northbound and changing lanes when the driver lost control. That’s when investigators say the tanker detached and overturned onto its side in the center median.

Crews were working Sunday to remove the wreckage and unload the chemical from the tanker. Hopkins said the freeway remained closed as of 9 p.m.
