PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence public schools are closing Monday because of the city’s second snowstorm in a week.

The storm is expected to drop 8 to 12 inches of snow beginning about 1 a.m. Monday and continuing through the day. Coastal Rhode Island areas are expected to see less snow.

Providence got about a foot-and-a-half of snow last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mayor Jorge Elorza also announced Sunday that a citywide street parking ban will take effect at 2 a.m. Monday to allow full access for snowplows. Garbage and recycling collection schedules are being pushed back a day for the rest of the week.

The mayor said the city’s road crews are ready and roads will be pretreated.

He urged residents to prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions and stay alert for people in need of help.
