PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says Rhode Island will receive more than $5 million in federal funding for homeless housing and service programs.

Reed says the $5.26 million in federal Continuum of Care funding will help provide safe, affordable housing and supportive services for homeless Rhode Islanders.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates the grants will help more than 800 homeless individuals in Rhode Island by funding more than 40 homeless programs throughout the state.

The funding can be used for a variety of housing and services, including transitional and permanent supportive housing, rapid re-housing, street outreach and client assessment.

Some of the money will go toward a new 10-unit supportive housing project for homeless veterans.
