SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Spearfish High School students will represent the state in Washington at a national competition that tests their knowledge on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports (https://bit.ly/15QKZaH ) the school’s We the People team won the state competition this week at Black Hills State University in Spearfish.

The goal of the competition is to promote civic competence and responsibility for upper elementary and secondary students.

More than 28 million students and 75,000 educators have taken part in the program since 1987. It’s funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The team will now prepare for the We the People National Finals, April 24-27, on the campus of George Mason University and in hearing rooms on Capitol Hill.
