CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - A Texas botanist has been named director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports (https://bit.ly/1Ki3J06 ) Sunday that Damon Waitt has been appointed to start in the position April 13.

Waitt is currently the senior director and botanist at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.

Officials say he supervises the center’s gardens and natural areas in addition to spearheading invasive species initiatives, education programs and conservation efforts.

Waitt says he is drawn to the botanical garden’s emphasis on conservation, research and teaching.
