AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Hundreds of students from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst are participating in a boisterous but peaceful celebration of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victory.

University spokesman Edward F. Blaguszewski says 600 to 800 students gathered near a courtyard where dormitories are located Sunday night. He says there was “a loud, boisterous celebration” with shouting, some water bottles being tossed and a few students climbing trees.

Campus police arrested one person for disorderly conduct.

Last week, university officials announced dormitories would be closed to off-campus visitors during the Super Bowl. The campus previously had been the scene of violent celebrations during other championships by Boston teams.

Boston police, who urged residents in tweets to “make our city proud,” report that fans are celebrating in a “smart, responsible & respectful manner.”
