BOSTON (AP) - A winter storm spreading across southern New England overnight is expected to bring around a foot of snow to much of the area.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Most inland areas are expected to have 8 to 12 inches of snow by Monday night, with amounts over a foot in far western sections and half that in southern coastal areas expected to get rain and sleet mixing in.

Snow is expected to begin late Sunday evening in western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, and after midnight in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Snow is expected to fall heavily, blown by winds gusting to 35 mph, during the morning. It is expected to taper off in the afternoon.

The area had a widespread 2-foot snowfall last week.
