CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A woman wounded by her ex-husband has reached a settlement with Charleston County authorities over allegations they didn’t do enough to protect her.

The Post and Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1Af75B2 ) Sunday that the sheriff’s department recently reached a $195,000 settlement with Melissity Hayes.

Hayes sued in 2012, saying deputies did not protect her from Ronald Ratliff just days after he gunned down Hayes’ mother.

Ratliff’s body was found in the attic of his ex-wife’s home in January 2011. Authorities had been looking for Ratliff in the death of Linda Hayes, whose body was found at the house a week earlier.

Authorities say Ratliff returned to the house and hid in the attic. They say he shot and wounded Hayes before killing himself.
