CHICAGO (AP) - An attorney for a 34-year-old Illinois woman facing terrorism-related charges says her client understands the gravity of the charges despite frequently smiling during court hearings.

The lawyer for Mediha Medy Salkicevic (SAHL’-key-sah-vich) told The Associated Press before a Tuesday bond hearing in Chicago that her client smiled to convey to family members that they should “stay strong.”

During a Monday hearing the Schiller Park woman also raised her fist as she entered. She is accused of aiding militant groups in Syria and Iraq.

Attorney Andrea Gambino says Salkicevic takes the charges “very seriously” and “believes she’s innocent.”

Salkicevic and other Bosnian immigrants were indicted in St. Louis for sending money and equipment to designated terrorist organizations. They could face decades in prison.

A federal judge denied Salkicevic bond later Tuesday.
