FREDONIA, N.Y. (AP) - A state college in western New York is pulling the plug on a popular spring weekend party that had gotten too raucous in recent years.

Officials at the State University of New York at Fredonia sent an email to students on Monday notifying them that the college will no longer have activities for the two-day festival known as FRED Fest, held the first weekend in May.

SUNY Fredonia officials also say non-student guests won’t be permitted in dormitories from May 1-3.

In recent years, some off-campus parties have gotten out of hand, resulting in numerous arrests. College officials say most of the problems are caused by non-students from out of town who pack the village during the party weekend.

The event began in 1980 as a celebration of spring after a long western New York winter.
