PHOENIX (AP) - Former Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett says he’s amazed by the fortitude and consideration shown by Kayla Jean Mueller’s family.

Bennett is a longtime Prescott resident who was approached by Mueller’s father, Carl, after she first went missing. Bennett put the family in touch with members of the state’s congressional delegation.

Bennett said Carl Mueller called him Monday night to privately share word that the family had received confirmation of Kayla Mueller’s death.

Bennett told The Associated Press that Carl Mueller wanted to keep him from being blindsided by the news that would break Tuesday.

He said he’ll always be amazed how the Mueller family has handled the situation, including being so considerate as to reach out to people involved in what he called “such a minor way.”
