WASHINGTON (AP) - Safety officials in the Mid-Atlantic region are warning drivers of icy conditions Tuesday morning.

A number of accidents were reported throughout the region, including multiple wrecks on Interstates 95 and 97, and U.S. Route 50.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement in the Washington-Baltimore region, warning drivers of patchy ice and slick conditions. Winter weather advisories in southern Maryland, the Eastern Shore and Delaware warn of periods of snow and freezing rain, also causing dangerous driving conditions.

Crews with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration were deployed overnight to treat roadways and were planning to continue storm operations through the morning rush hour.

The icy conditions led to a number of school districts throughout the region to operate on two-hour delays.
