LOS ANGELES (AP) - A pedestrian struck and killed by a squad car driven in heavy fog by a Los Angeles police officer has been identified as a 64-year-old man.

Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter told City News Service on Tuesday that Dean Joseph Bucheit died at the scene of the accident in the Del Rey area.

Bucheit’s hometown was not immediately known.

Investigators say fog may have been a factor in the crash early Monday.

Sgt. Barry Montgomery said the bomb-squad officer behind the wheel, a 20-year department veteran, did not initially realize he struck a person. The officer circled back twice to investigate before finding the victim and administering CPR, Montgomery said.

The officer, who was alone in the car, was heading home after a shift at Los Angeles International Airport.
