WOODLAWN, Md. (AP) - A Baltimore County Police officer says he accidentally shot a 14-year-old boy while he was off-duty and investigating a reported burglary.

The police department says two county officers were working security at a Woodlawn apartment complex when they responded to a burglary report Monday evening. As they were investigating an apartment unit, one of the officers says they saw someone come out on a balcony.

The officer says he had already been pointing his gun at the balcony and that it accidentally discharged. A bullet hit a 14-year-old boy, whose injures were non-life-threatening.

The officer has been placed on administrative status. The department says its homicide unit is investigating the shooting and will turn over the results to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office to consider whether charges are justified.
