BALTIMORE (AP) - The Peabody Chamber Opera is preparing the U.S. debut of a new opera based on the Jane Austen novel “Mansfield Park.”

The opera by composer Jonathan Dove celebrates the 200th anniversary of the book’s publication. The story follows the character of Fanny Price, a poor girl who is sent to live with her uncle at his family estate, Mansfield Park.

The Peabody Chamber Opera will present the U.S. premiere of the new production Thursday through Sunday in Baltimore. The opera first premiered in 2011 in northwest England. It was commissioned by Heritage Opera, a professional touring company.

The opera is being presented by Baltimore’s Theatre Project.
