NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A man has been accused of breaking into a police station evidence room in Vermont and taking two handguns and 52 bags of heroin.

The Caledonian Record reports (https://bit.ly/1KDKMHn) 19-year-old Mikeal Rivers was being held for lack of $25,000 bail. He pleaded not guilty to burglary, obstructing justice, and other charges.

Police say the break-in happened Sunday at the Newport City police station. Police didn’t know about it until two officers found empty and full evidence bags at a home while seeking someone on probation.

The police station is on the first floor of the municipal building; the evidence storage room is in the basement.

Police said Rivers was identified from footage from the municipal building surveillance cameras.
