SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield has launched its annual appeal, hoping to raise the ambitious amount of $3 million.

The theme of this year’s appeal is “Serve With Love,” a quote from Pope Francis.

Bishop Mitchell Rozanski said in a letter to parishes last week that the appeal helps the church “carry out the work of Jesus Christ.”

Money raised during the appeal goes to human service ministries, and supports Catholic education, clergy and religious and Catholic communication.

Last year’s appeal allocated $2.5 million.

Diocese spokesman Mark Dupont tells The Republican that even if the church reaches the $3 million goal, that falls far short of what is needed.
