WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - State officials are set to hold the inaugural meeting of a panel charged with studying ways to improve public safety and reduce violent crime in Wilmington.

Gov. Jack Markell planned to give opening remarks at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Wilmington Public Safety Strategies Commission.

The commission was established by a joint resolution in the General Assembly last month. It will undertake a fact-based, intensive review of public safety strategies in Delaware’s largest city.

State officials have retained the Police Foundation of Washington, D.C., and Vigilant Resources International of New York as consultants to the panel.

The commission, which is expected to meet at least four more times, is led by state Safety and Homeland Security Secretary Lew Schiliro and New Castle County public safety director Joseph Bryant Jr.
