EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A 78-year-old woman was struck and killed by a semi-truck while walking home from the YMCA Monday in Eugene.

Police say Ruth Madsen Ross was hit by a St. Vincent de Paul truck pulling out of a donation site.

Her husband, Ken Ross, told The Register-Guard (https://bit.ly/1M9sCPt ) the two had walked to the Y together and she offered to walk home for their car so he wouldn’t have to walk in heavy rain.

The 79-year-old Ken Ross is a retired University of Oregon mathematics professor. Ruth Ross was a retired secretary. They had been married 29 years.
