JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Longtime state Rep. Bennett Malone of Carthage is retiring from the Mississippi House, several months before the end of this four-year term.

The 71-year-old Democrat has had health problems the past several months and has been absent most days since this legislative session started in January.

His colleagues applauded as Malone appeared in the House chamber Thursday before his retirement was announced.

Malone has been in the House since 1980. He represents District 45, which includes parts of Leake, Neshoba, Rankin and Scott counties. He is a former chairman of the House Corrections Committee.

There’s not enough time to have a special election to fil the District 45 seat before the legislative session ends in early April.
