GENESSE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities in western New York say a husband and wife suffering from dementia have been found safe after a search was launched for them when their home was found empty.

State police say 83-year-old Charles Knowlton and his 79-year-old wife, Virginia, returned home around 9 a.m. Thursday after spending Wednesday night elsewhere.

Earlier, troopers said they were searching for the Knowltons because the couple had been last seen around noon Wednesday at their home in the rural Allegany County town of Genesee, on the Pennsylvania border 65 miles southeast of Buffalo.

Troopers said the couple’s car was gone from their property. Police had said the couple previously had lived in Alabama and may have tried to drive there.

Police say both Knowltons are doing fine.
