DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Authorities are seeking a Detroit-area jewel merchant who told police he was robbed of half a million dollars in diamonds last year outside a shopping mall.

Dearborn police said Thursday that Yakov Aminov is charged with filing a false police report.

Officers responded Feb. 12, 2014, to the reported holdup by two men in a Fairlane Town Center parking lot.

Police say an investigation determined there was no robbery. Police say Aminov may have left Michigan.

The false police report charge is a felony that carries up to four years in prison and a fine of $2,000.

Police Chief Ronald Haddad says making false reports can “result in a misuse of police resources.”
