CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A Mecklenburg County prosecutor says a Lake Wylie couple was shot to death in their home to prevent one of them from testifying about the robbery of their Charlotte store.

The Charlotte Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1Dm64qA) Assistant District Attorney Monique Holman told a District Court judge during an extradition hearing on Thursday that Doug and Debbie London were killed to keep Doug London from testifying against two men charged with the robbery of the couple’s mattress store.

Authorities have charged 21-year-old Malcolm Jarrell Hartley with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths. Because there were two victims, Hartley could face a death penalty trial in York County, South Carolina.

Prosecutors didn’t say during the hearing how Hartley might be linked with three men charged in federal court with the robbery.
