HONOLULU (AP) - The list of places in Honolulu where people cannot sit or lie on sidewalks has been expanded to for new locations.

KITV (https://is.gd/a8IaHc ) reports Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed a local measure Wednesday to expand the sit-lie ban to the Fort Street and Union malls downtown, as well as the Sun Yat Sen and Kekaulike malls in Chinatown.

The ban at the malls is similar to bans enacted in Waikiki and 15 other business districts.

Merchants at the malls have said the measure was necessary because of an increasing number of homeless people loitering near their businesses.

Violators of the ban could face $1,000 fines and one month in jail.
