OREM, Utah (AP) - A $12,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of a serial arsonist accused of setting fires that destroyed two apartment complexes under construction in Orem.

In announcing the reward Thursday, Mayor Richard Brunst said he believes the fires are the work of one or more people who are “trying to make a statement.”

Police and fire investigators think the suspect or suspects set smaller fires to distract authorities before torching the apartment buildings.

A Provo police cruiser was set on fire shortly before the latest apartment fire on Feb. 5, and a gas-station pump was torched minutes before the other apartment fire on Dec. 19.

Officials estimate the total damage of both fires is over $2 million. No injuries were reported in any of the blazes.
