GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say fire destroyed two homes and damaged a third in a Garden Grove neighborhood.

Fire Capt. Jim Gabbard tells KABC-TV that pack-rat conditions at one of the houses made it difficult for firefighters to get to the flames late Thursday.

He says a backhoe was brought in to remove items from the property to allow crews to get in.

City News Service says propane tanks could be heard exploding as the fire raged. The blaze was knocked down in about two hours.

One firefighter was hospitalized with minor injuries.

At least 12 people were evacuated.
