ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy who was hit by a garbage truck while he crossed a street at a busy Albany intersection with his mother.

Albany police say the boy and his mother were holding hands and walking with the crossing light within the crosswalk when they were hit by an ICS Waste and Recycling garbage truck at the intersection of Central Avenue and Quail Street around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The boy was treated at the scene before being taking to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name hasn’t been released.

Officials with the Albany public school system tell local media that the boy was a pre-kindergarten student at the Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy.
