AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A jury has awarded an Augusta man $475,000 in damages for injuries he suffered six years ago when he fell while working on a roof.

Wednesday’s verdict in favor of 54-year-old Martin James Merrill followed a two-day trial in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Merrill sued Ricky Lee Sirois, doing business as Caswell and Son, claiming Sirois as general contractor was negligent in his placement of a ladder.

Merrill fell eight to 10 feet from the roof of a home on Jan. 5, 2009, and suffered a number of injuries, including a fractured pelvis and a fractured elbow.

His lawyer says Merrill ended up with $131,000 in medical bills.

Sirois’s lawyer tells the Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/1Do5R6f ) that Merrill was responsible for his own injuries and called the verdict “unfortunate.”
