PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a Columbia County prison inmate’s death.

According to a press release, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a medical emergency in the prison Thursday afternoon. Paramedics were called to the prison. A 40-year-old inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office says it is investigating whether another inmate was involved in the death.

The department said in the release that an autopsy is scheduled and they will not release the inmate’s name until family members have been notified. Sheriff’s officials didn’t immediately return a message.

A state Department of Corrections spokeswoman says the prison went into immediate lockdown following the incident. She says the lockdown ended Friday afternoon but declined further comment.
