BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - A Butte man was shot in the arm during an altercation with a Butte-Silver Bow law enforcement officer.

Sheriff Ed Lester says three officers were looking for a wanted felon at about 1:30 a.m. Friday. Officers spotted 21-year-old Zachary Rogers of Butte, who fled and hopped into a nearby sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the SUV accelerated toward an officer, who drew his weapon and ordered the driver to stop.

Lester says the officer was removing the 36-year-old driver from the vehicle when one round discharged from the officer’s handgun and struck the driver in the arm.

The driver underwent surgery for injuries that Lester said were not considered life-threatening. His name hasn’t been released.

Rogers was arrested on a felony warrant.

The officer has been placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
