BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Reshanda Gray scored 24 points and Mercedes Jefflo added 23 as short-handed California hung on to beat UCLA 70-64 on Thursday night for its eighth straight victory.

The nations assist leader and Cal’s second leading scorer, Brittany Boyd, was out with a concussion.

Gray and Jefflo combined for 14-of-27 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds for California (19-5, 11-2 Pac-12). Mikayla Cowling added 11 points.

Cal led by as many as 14 in the first half, but UCLA scored the final six of the half to pull within 38-31. Gray had 13 at the break and Jefflo 12.

Kacy Swain’s basket midway through the second half gave UCLA its first lead of the game at 50-49. Cal battled back to take a 60-54 lead with 5:39 left and made 4 of 4 free throws in the final 14 seconds to seal it.

Nirra Fields had 14 points for UCLA (10-14, 6-7).
