SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - About 1,400 troops and fighter jets are assembled on the Georgia coast for a major training exercise.

Savannah is hosting units from across the nation this week for Sentry Savannah, a large event run by the Georgia Air National Guard’s Air Dominance Center.

Jets will be flying over the coastal area and about 500 square miles of ocean through Feb. 22.

The Savannah Morning News (https://bit.ly/1CmUfiq ) reports that the exercise provides a chance for both pilots and airplane crews to hone their skills.

Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher Rachel says teams with as many as 40 fighter jets have squared off in prolonged dogfights during the exercise.

Pilots also will drop inert bombs and fire other munitions just south of Savannah at the Townsend Bombing Range in McIntosh County.
