ROME (AP) - The president of the Italian athletics federation says he has no plans to include Alex Schwazer on the team for the 2016 Olympics.

Schwazer, who won the 50-kilometer walk at the 2008 Beijing Games, had six months added Thursday to his existing 3 ½-year doping ban, with the extra punishment imposed for evading tests. Schwazer would still be eligible to potentially compete in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

But FIDAL president Alfio Giomi says, “We already have the three walkers for the 50K, so it’s unthinkable to exclude someone who has followed all the required steps to make room for a possible medal.”

Schwazer failed an out-of-competition test before arriving at the 2012 London Olympics and was removed from Italy’s team before competing.
