URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A judge has rejected the University of Illinois’ attempt to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a professor who believes he was wrongly denied a job.

Steven Salaita filed his Freedom of Information lawsuit against the university after the school declined to provide him documents he believes might back up his claim.

According to The News-Gazette (https://bit.ly/174Y7Jx ), Champaign County Judge Chase Leonhard on Friday declined to dismiss the lawsuit.

Salaita accepted an offer in 2013 to teach at the Urbana-Champaign campus starting in August 2014. But the offer was rescinded over sometimes-profane, anti-Israel Twitter messages he sent last summer.

He has separately sued to get the job, arguing he had already been hired and had the academic freedom to write the messages.

The university argues he was not yet an employee.
