SCRIBA, N.Y. (AP) - A central New York man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

State police say 20-year-old Edward Lewis was arrested Thursday and arraigned on a first-degree manslaughter charge in Scriba (SKREYE’-buh) Town Court.

Lewis initially had been charged Saturday with assault and endangering the welfare of a child after emergency workers were called to an Oswego County home for a report of an unresponsive child.

Troopers say the child, Jeremiah Jones, was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he died Sunday afternoon.

Police say Lewis violently shook the boy, causing his head to hit the floor.

Lewis is being held in the county jail on $100,000 bail. A message left with his lawyer wasn’t returned.
