MONROE, Mich. (AP) - A Monroe man has found a hidden room in his house that held items dating back to the mid-1800s.

The Monroe News (https://bit.ly/1vrX5gX ) reports Daniel Conklin made the discovery while restoring a home built in 1893 that he bought with his fiancee. The room is next to the basement, and the objects were buried in dirt.

Conklin’s earliest find is a broken shard of a jug from the 1850s. Other items include a medicine capsule from the early 1900s and parts of porcelain bowls from the 1800s.

Conklin, with help from the Monroe County Historical Museum, found out the home is on the site of a former stable. Museum curator Chris Kull says the room was possibly once a hole for an outhouse and that people threw away garbage in there.
