LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Anglers willing to brave the icy weather this weekend can fish in Michigan waters without a license.

The state Department of Natural Resources has declared Saturday and Sunday a “free fishing weekend” to promote the sport.

Fishing tournaments, ice fishing clinics and other events are scheduled at a number of state parks and recreation areas.

Although licenses aren’t required, all other fishing regulations are still in force. Use of salmon eggs or minnows for bait is restricted in some waters in the campaign to slow the spread of a fish virus.

Michigan has observed the Winter Free Fishing Weekend annually since 1994. The state has more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams and 11,000 inland lakes.
